WHAT GOVERNOR OSHIOMOLE TOLD NIGERIAN GOVERNORS ON THE REDUCTION OF MINIMUM WAGE

Nigerian News

At the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) last week's meeting at the Presidential villa in Abuja. The Governors announced that, they can no longer pay the N18,000 national minimum wage, which according to them was; introduced when the price of crude oil was $126 per barrel arguing that now that the crude oil price is about $41 per barrel, the states can no longer afford to pay the stipulated minimum wage.

In a sharp response to the Governors the two factions of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) led by Comrade Ayuba Wabba and Comrade Joe Ajaero respectively, struck a united chord and warned the Governors to, "prepare for war", if they went ahead to implement their resolution.

The Labour leaders speaking on behalf of the NLC even went ahead to signify it's intention to demand for increment of the minimum wage, thus heightening the sense of impending Labour showdown.

Governor Adams Oshiomole of Edo state, who is a former leader of the NLC, quickly sided with organised labour, warning his colleagues that; "democracy, does not run at the convenience and comfort of Governors, ministers and Presidents".

Governor Oshiomole reminded them that, the national minimum wage was elaborately negotiated before former President Goodluck Jonathan signed it into a national policy. That the Governors  should not fail to keep to the terms of the policy by paying the minimum wage as agreed.
